Is this type of pet for me?

Having a ferret is like having a very active toddler in your home. They are capable of being potty trained, but don't be surprised if they have accidents, and you find yourself trying again and again to train them where to use the bathroom!

Patience is certainly a virtue when it comes to owning a ferret. They are very trusting and inquisitive animals, so it is your job to see that they don't get hurt! They will climb into anything and everything, so NEVER turn on any appliance, until you make sure your ferret is accounted for! Also, be careful where you step and sit. Our ferret, Monkey (appropriately named), has hidden under dirty clothes, throw rugs, and even the cushions on the sofa. It would be very, very easy to overlook this and crush him by accident! You have to learn to train yourself to be aware anytime your ferret is out for playtime.

Also, pick up what you don't want chewed, carried off, and hidden. What the ferret can pick up that is interesting to him, he will take! We have to be very careful in regard to remote controls, as he wants to chew the buttons off!

On the positive side, if you are willing to take on this high maintance pet, your rewards will be having a blast watching him play, and interacting with him! Ferrets play very much like kittens do, so be careful for nips and pounces! They also like to chase and to be chased, running to hide under furniture, then popping their little heads out like a real life "Whack-a-Mole"!

Their diet consists of ferret food (of course), a blend of nutrients especially formulated for a ferret. They like raisins, but be conservative with this, as the sugar can cause tooth decay! My ferret likes kitten "treats", but again, I ration this, as it's not "official" ferret food, and I want that silly boy to be around with us for a long time!

If you choose to purchase a ferret, good-luck to you and enjoy!
